TransLoc and Ryde

Creating a Flexible Solution to Fill Transportation Gaps

DURHAM, N.C., April 8, 2019 – TransLoc, a Ford Smart Mobility company*, announces the launch of RYDE, an agency-owned microtransit pilot with Golden Empire Transit District (GET) in Bakersfield, California. This on-demand service offers riders a new and affordable way to get around southwest Bakersfield by requesting as-needed rides within the service area.

“If you enjoy the convenience of services such as Uber or Lyft, then RYDE is going to be the flexible solution with professionally trained drivers you’ve been waiting for,” said GET’s CEO Karen King. “RYDE offers tremendous potential to expand GET’s service areas, attract new riders, fill transportation gaps, and provide a more effective and sustainable way to reach low-density communities and other traditionally hard-to-serve areas.”

Instead of relying on fixed-route transit at fixed times, riders will be able to book a custom trip on the Microtransit app or by phone and track their shuttle in real-time. Customers may also walk up to a RYDE vehicle to request a ride if one is located in their zone. Within the southwest area of Bakersfield, rides are only $3.50 one-way and offered seven days a week as a part of the pilot program. The service is ADA compliant, with each shuttle accommodating up to three wheelchairs.

“Riders can book a RYDE on the Microtransit app as well as explore fixed-route services. The trip-planning functionality allows you to enter your desired destination and presents options and fares for the different ways in which you can get to where you need to go utilizing GET,” said Elaine McVey, Business Owner of TransLoc’s Municipal Mobility division. “We are excited to partner with GET and enhance the safe and affordable options for those traveling around southwest Bakersfield.”
